Serological tests for syphilis in healthy rabbits.

چکیده

Serological tests for syphilis (STS), as well as being important aids in the diagnosis of syphilis in man, are important in the study of experimental syphilis in animals. Rabbits not infected with Treponema pallidum sometimes show reactivity in one or another of the several available serological tests for the disease and, with the exception of the enzootic rabbit-spirochaetosis caused by Treponema cuniculi (Kolmer and Casselman, 1913), the reasons for such reactivity in rabbits have not been determined. Serological testing is one of the more objective means of following the course of experimental animal syphilis, and the rabbit is the most frequently used experimental model in this disease. The reactivity pattern in certain tests is defined here for rabbits that, so far as can be determined, are not infected with treponemes.

Lack of serological evidence for venereal spirochaetosis in wild Victorian rabbits and the susceptibility of laboratory rabbits to Treponema paraluis-cuniculi.

Sera from 608 wild rabbits were examined using serological tests for syphilis as an indicator of infection with Treponema paraluis-cuniculi. Only eight sera gave positive or weakly positive results in the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test, and none of these eight sera gave positive results in the Treponema pallidum haemagglutination assay (TPHA). Thus, it appears that wild rabbit populations in Vi...

Persistence of T. pallidum and its significance in penicillin-treated seropositive late syphilis.

The observation of T. pallidum-like organisms reported by Collart, Borel, and Durel (1962, a, b, c, 1964) in the lymph nodes of both men and rabbits in seroreactive treated syphilis and the stimulating work of Smith and Israel (1967 a, b, 1968) on intraocular treponemes in late syphilis have created much interest in the survival and virulence of T. pallidum in tissues and body fluids in cases o...

Comparison of the VDRL slide, TPI, and FTA-ABS tests in experimental syphilis in rabbits.

The first serological test for syphilis, developed by Wassermann, Neisser, and Bruck (1906), was a complement-fixation test for reagin activity. Many tests for reagin activity have been developed since then, including the Kline, Kahn, Hinton, Kolmer, Mazzini, and VDRL slide tests. However, none of these is absolutely specific for syphilis. The VDRL slide test (Harris, Rosenberg, and Riedel, 194...

Susceptibility of rabbits venereally infected with Treponema paraluis-cuniculi to superinfections with Treponema pallidum.

Three female rabbits, venereally infected with Treponema paraluis-cuniculi between five and eight months previously, had treponeme-containing genital lesions and positive results to serological tests for syphilis. These rabbits and four normal female rabbits were challenged with Treponema pallidum intradermally on the shaved back with triplicate doses of 10(4), 10(3), 10(2), and 10 treponemes (...

Treponema-specific and antilipoidal 19S(IgM) antibodies in penicillin-treated and untreated rabbits after infection with Treponema pallidum.

The titres of treponema-specific and antilipoidal 19S(IgG) antibodies were determined in rabbits infected intratesticularly with Treponema pallidum. One group of rabbits was treated with penicillin the other served as control. Using different serological tests it was shown that 19S(IgM) antibodies were still detectable eight months after infection at about the same titres in both groups. In con...
